The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Three Fires Council Endowment Trust Fund. This contribution is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace, the donor’s annual gift to the Council’s Friends of Scouting Campaign.
James E. West was the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, and he served in that position for more than three decades. The West Fellowship award is available for gifts of $1,000 and up in cash or marketable securities to a council endowment fund. The gift must be in addition to – and not replace or diminish – the donor’s annual Friends of Scouting support. Many individuals and corporations make these gifts either on behalf of someone else – such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, a special accomplishment, or anniversary – or in memory of a special individual. If an institution is truly “the lengthened shadow of one man,” it is more than fitting that the BSA honor James E. West’s major contributions to Scouting in such a significant way.
Pay it Forward Through a Lasting Legacy
With the leadership of a dedicated volunteer and the Lowaneu Allanque Lodge the Three Fires Council, Boy Scouts of America has been promoting the James E. West Fellowship award to recognize outstanding volunteers through an investment in the future of Scouting. Again this year we will be presenting James E. West Fellowship Awards in the name of deserving volunteers. It is our hope that we can engage more donors throughout the Council to “Pay it Forward.” For every $1,000 we raise in endowment gifts we can present a James E. West Fellowship Award to another deserving volunteer. Gifts made to this program should be in addition to your normal annual giving. Any contributions to the endowment fund are permanently restricted and only the interest earned on those gifts will be used annually to support local Scouting. It is truly a gift that keeps giving and ensures the future of Scouting.
Donors may also make a contribution to the endowment fund of $1,000 or more and have their own James E. West Fellowship Award presented to them as a way to inspire other individuals to contribute to the future of Scouting. Each gift is awarded a certificate, special knot to be worn on the Scout Field Uniform and presented a lapel pin. Gifts of any amount will be pooled to award the James E. West Fellowship Awards and individuals are welcome to pledge a gift and make payments over the year.
Waite Phillips, founder of Waite Phillips Oil Company and donor of Philmont Scout Ranch to the Boy Scouts of America, once said, “It is truly a wise man who can leave something for the future.”
